Either a large deciduous shrub or short tree, often forming dense thickets and growing up to 20′ tall, Chokecherry is well suited for windbreaks, screens, noise barriers, patio and Japanese gardens, wildlife habitat and mass plantings for soil stabilization or erosion control. This species does well in stream edges, providing thermal cover over water and stabilizing banks. Chokecherry also blooms white flowers in the spring, has bitter reddish-black berries in late summer, and turns yellow to red in the fall! The berries are eaten by wildlife too!
